Socialization Adventure Walk

January 7 @ 8:00 am - 9:00 am

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every month that begins at 8:00 am on day First of the month, repeating indefinitely

FREE

Adventure Walk is a group walk for those dog owners who would love to enjoy the dog-friendly world together more!

Adventure walks are a bit different than a typical walk to give your dog physical exercise. These walks are more about helping your puppy or dog focus on proactive exposure — creating neutral and positive associations with different people, places, and things.

The adventure walk is a relaxed exploration of different environments, seeing other people and animals from a distance, and an opportunity to start building very simple (but very important) training foundations.

We will be working on holding our dogs to the highest social standards as we traverse around the Huntington-Long Beach Area together and enjoy all this area has to offer for its dog-owning community!

This meet-up will be held at various spots. Be sure to check the location when signing up.

THIS CLASS IS DESIGNED TO TAKE ALL YOU LEARNED IN YOUR BASIC OR PUPPY CLASS AND APPLY IT TO REAL-LIFE SITUATIONS!

We work on our walking and manners in various locations around town, as our community is very dog friendly!

In this session, we focus on socialization (for pups) and practicing manners in public! It is time to put the training to work these real-life settings!

*This class is for students past and current students of Canine Learning Academy

Do you have a puppy that is ready to start exploring beyond the backyard?

or Perhaps you have a dog in training that needs to be around more well-mannered dogs so you can practice your skills in public.

Adventure walks are a bit different than a normal walk you might take to give your dog some physical exercise. Socialization walks with your puppy or dog focus on proactive exposure — creating neutral and positive associations with different people, places, and things.

Each month we choose a different location and dogs are exposed to new and different things each time safely.

An adventure walk is a relaxed exploration of different environments, getting to see other people and animals from a distance, and an opportunity to start building very simple (but very important) training foundations. We use some basics such as name recognition, hand targeting, paws up, and settling to set you up for success in future walking in public.

The Goal

The goal of adventure walks is to create calm and positive associations with different things your dog sees, smells, hears, and otherwise experiences. This helps prevent fear, anxiety, or reactivity toward these things in the future.

Benji experienced so much while out and about — and many things we can’t even count since we lack his sense of smell! Here are some of the things I noticed:

Sights: Shadows from railings, dogs behind a fence, dogs on leash, baby stroller, a child playing on the jungle gym, a cat in the window, a man in a hat, fire hydrant, yellow color contrasts for crosswalks

Sounds: Barking, yard tools, airplanes, trucks, bicycle bells, buses passing

Surfaces: Asphalt, grass, metal manhole cover, raised sidewalk bumps, sand, gravel, tiled floor

Cost is FREE for Canine LEarning Academy STudents, current and past.

RSVP by texting Yo 714.727.6494

Prerequisites: Currently enrolled in, or have completed training at Canine Learning Academy

*This is NOT intended for aggressive or reactive dogs.

*This class is also NOT intended to fix pulling/loose leash walking issues. In this class, we are focused, instead, on polite manners and socialization. If your dog is likely to pull while you are out on a walk, please come equipped with a front clip harness for this class.
