FAQ’s

Why should I start training my puppy early on?

A puppy’s “socialization” window closes at about 14-16 weeks. Before 16 weeks, puppies are more curious and willing to try new experiences and create positive associations. After 16 weeks, puppies may become more cautious, and novel experiences may be more challenging.

Young puppies do best with puppies closest to their age and are less likely to be overwhelmed behaviorally. Puppy Preschool & Kindergarten are designed to facilitate positive exposures, address normal puppy behaviors, and prevent the development of behavior problems. The primary focus of these classes is exposure to people, novelty, and working around other dogs. This class is designed to set you and your puppy up for success with housetraining, enrichment activities, communication with one another, and life skills such as leash walking, coming when called, etc.

What makes your program different?

As always our methods are 100% force free and positive reinforcement based! Unlike other boarding and training programs out there, we will not put a shock collar on your dog, EVER! We get results by teaching your dog what you’d like them to do and make those things what your dog wants to do! So not only is your furry friend a well behaved pup, but they are loving every minute of it! It’s a win-win!

What are your health and safety practices?

Health and safety is of upmost importance to us at Canine Learning Academy. We do everything in our power to maintain a clean, safe, and healthy environment for our students.

Puppies must be current on all of their vaccinations, at all times, and provide proof of vaccinations throughout enrollment. This includes DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies.

Puppies must also be free of any parasites and provide proof of clear fecal test results.

In addition, every puppy must pass a health check each morning before admittance for the class is granted. During the health check, puppies are examined closely for hot spots, rashes, fleas, and other signs that may indicate a health concern like red eyes, a runny nose, inflamed gums, bacteria on the paws, etc. Any puppy exhibiting a potential health concern will not be allowed to attend class until the problem is resolved. This is in the best interest of the sick puppy and every other student in class, in order to maintain the healthiest environment possible.

We use a special puppy-friendly rubber floor that lessens the stress on a growing pup’s joints and provides softer padding when puppies are playing and training.

What can I expect to learn in class?

Every class will include periods of settling, learning new skills, practicing handling exercises, exploring novel props, and playing with similarly aged and sized puppies. We keep our class sizes small (4-8 students) to ensure each team gets plenty of guidance from our teachers and class assistants!

The best part about being part of the Canine Learning Academy family is we can provide on-going support for your dog’s lifetime. We can help you with all the stages you will go through with your dog. We can be with you every step of the way.

What is the difference between an under-vaccinated puppy and a fully vaccinated puppy?

An under-vaccinated puppy is not yet fully immunized against distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza (DHPP). Puppies begin a series of DHPP vaccinations starting around 6-8 weeks of age. They continue to receive a DHPP vaccination every 2-4 weeks until at least 16 weeks of age.

Once your puppy receives the final vaccination in the series, usually between 16-18 weeks of age, they are considered fully vaccinated for DHPP. The first rabies vaccine is generally given at 3 months of age.

From Our Students

“Dori is learning obedience. I’m learning how to communicate with Dori.  I know it’s called “dog” training but honestly, if I didn’t have Yo to teach ME the techniques, I don’t believe my Dori (nor I) would be progressing.”
